Arlene’s River

As God giveth and taketh away, so does the river. It gives life, nourishment, and peace. It divides one place from another, yet offers transportation. When peaceful, it brings joy, coolness, and refreshment and is a source of entertainment. When stirred up, the river rises, overflowing its normal boundaries. An angry river can carve mountains, break through walls, put large stones on the road and take part of the road back with it, into its bosom. Bridges give way before the fury and trees go along for the ride. Sometimes the bridges need a little urging from the trees to give way.

Arlene’s river is no different. Arlene grew up along the river and raised her children there as well. She knows the peace and the power of the river. From Hurricanes Diane and Agnes to more recent Hurricane Ivan, she has seen how the abundance of water can change the landscape.

As autumn tinges the leaves of the trees, Arlene’s thoughts travel back over the summer’s memories. She is sitting on the dock watching the sun diamonds glint off the water remembering the grandkids squeals and laughter echoing off the water. A beaver swims by, diving under when he scents her presence and resurfacing further upriver. The now-resident great blue heron finds branch across the river and pauses. “Paradise would not be paradise without a river”, she thought. “I can only wonder what that pure river of life is like, coming from the throne of God Himself…”

I love the "life" you gave to the river. This was a wonderful read and I truly enjoyed it.

My kind of entry; short, sweet and to the point. I loved the peaceful feeling I derived from this river, and the "other" river we all long to behold one day. Very well done. An enjoyable read.
