It picks me up and takes me away.
The tempo or style is not important, you see,
As long as the air has a melody.
Harmonies blend and make full the sound,
As melodies lift my feet from the ground.
Play for me on strings or on brass,
And let me escape as I lay in the grass.
The noise of the street can never compete
With a melody composed of notes on a sheet
Written by one who has ascended on high
To capture refrains of the sweet by and by.
Champions of faith our hymnals have filled
With melodies to bless and our spirits rebuild.
Why spend all your time in the work-a-day world
With your melody hidden and your banner unfurled.
So stop for a moment in your rush and your hurry.
Take time to sing and forget all your worry.
Yes, sing to the Lord, make his melody yours
Yes, sing and rejoice, while your inward man soars.
