Topic: Vision (08/03/06)
The birds of prey swooped down again and again; trying to claim the carcasses of the sacrifice that Abram had laid before the Lord. Abram used his staff to scatter the scavengers before they could settle upon the remains of the heifer, she-goat, ram, turtledove and pigeon. The birds had not been divided but the animals he had split down the middle and laid each half opposite the other.

Earlier, the Lord had spoken to Abram in a vision. The Lord promised him a son!

“Gaze into the evening sky and count the stars. So shall your seed be after you.”

Abram believed with all his heart. He knew he could trust God. Then God commanded this sacrifice as a sign that He would bless Abram with the land He had shown him as an inheritance. The sun began to set and a deep, deep sleep fell upon Abram. As he slept, it seemed that a great darkness enveloped him; filling him with horror. The Lord spoke.

“Your descendants will be strangers in a strange land. They will not be citizens; they will be slaves!
400 years of affliction and oppression will be theirs but I will bring them out with a mighty right arm. I will pour out My judgment upon that nation and your descendants shall come away with great possessions. Your yourself shall live to be an old, old man. You will die in peace. In the fourth generation, your seed shall return to this land that I have promised you.”

Then Abram saw what appeared to be a flaming torch and a smoking oven pass between the sacrificial pieces and consume them. The darkness lifted. Stars, millions of stars shined in the heavens. Those were Abram's children. His grandchildren. His great-grandchildren and beyond. God had brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees and given him a glorious inheritance. Abram worshiped the Lord. Then he hurried to his tent to fetch Sarai. He wanted to show her the stars.

A good piece. I especially liked the first and last paragraphs. TO make it even stronger, take a look and see if you think you are 'telling' in places, rather than 'showing'. I think the third paragraph would be an example. Good work though.
