Chill winds blow across the land,
Sending shriveled leaves
On a sailing adventure
Before dropping them
On frost-covered ground.
Where once abounded children’s shouts,
Abandoned playgrounds
Now echo with sounds of clanking
From metal chains of swings
That reel with the wind’s breath.
Walkers, who have replaced
Shorts and tee shirts
With jeans and knit tops,
Tug warm sweaters and jackets
Tightly around themselves
And bow their hatted heads
Against the force of wintry gusts.
Ribbons of chimney smoke
Draw wavy lines above housetops.
The bare branches of tree limbs
Emit eerie creaking sounds
Within the orchestra of breezes.
Flakes of snow swirling about
Bring back the voices of children,
Who eagerly anticipate the advent
Of snowstorms to leave behind
Ammunition for snowball fights
And icy crystals for snowmen,
Along with opportunities for sledding fun.
In November’s waning days
When house doors are opened,
The crisp air is redolent with wondrous aromas
Of fat turkeys and apple pies
Baking in kitchen ovens.
The sun takes longer naps
When come cool November days,
And chill winds blow across the land.
