Peace reigned within my sun-drenched heart
Through days of silvery lakeside calm
And froth-tossed white-capped foam
That mirrored hope poured from above
Inspiring childlike faith and love.
Immersed I thrived while longing to remain
Midst stealthy snails and closed-mouth clams
That nestled in their sandy spots
Beneath the water’s silky shine
Where everything was God’s and mine.
Loving a childhood dream was risky business
As wedding vows led to a landlocked house
With grown-up jobs and bills to pay
Far from the lapping lull of waves
And nighttime stars and dawn’s soft haze.
There I pined through sleepless nights
When babies cried and moonlight sighed
And winds howled into window cracks
While far away the cattails waved
From lakeside shores I loved and craved.
Perhaps some day I might reclaim
The freedom of those pristine hours
On rock-and-shell-strewn sandy bars
As fishy tadpoles swished the stream
That fed the lake with twinkled gleam.
Hope buoyed and anchored me to One
Who hinted He could lead me to
Some place where turtles sunned on logs
And herons eyed the shallows clear
To scout fish dinners near my pier.
Love’s passion fueled my dreamer’s heart
With visions soaring high like gulls
In inner skies that stretched beyond
The endless march of days gone dry
Where water-dreams could not quite die.

One day in perfect time God’s wave-messengers
Lapped their watery tongues on a moss-haired seawall
And a moon-like trail pointed to a new front door
Where I stood with windswept face and felt the kiss
Of God’s own presence and redemptive bliss.
