When a painter sets out on a new project he will have before him a blank canvas. It is there to do whatever he likes, he can work diligently and with a plan, and finish up with a job well done, or he can just dither about splashing paint anywhere and everywhere achieving nothing of any merit.

Whatever he achieves at the end of the day is an accurate reflection of what he has put into it, and he will either finish up unhappy with the result of his endeavours or he will be happy and content, and eager to start out on something new. Thus it is with life. Each new day that dawns is a blank canvas for us to do what we want with, to live life to the full and to reach out to others in a spirit of friendship, or we can sit in isolation and brood over the fact that we have wasted yet another wonderful opportunity that has been offered to us. Sadly, too many people’s lives are marred by troubled memories of yesterday, and unnecessary fears of tomorrow.

Of course often there will be times when we have particular tasks to do during the day. We could not survive in life if there was no form of routine or if we did not have the necessary skills to do what is needed. We have to earn a living or there is housework or shopping to be done, there are all sorts of demands on our time that we cannot, or would not wish to ignore.

To do nothing during these golden minutes and hours that have been given to us is a terrible waste of time, for they are among life’s greatest blessings, and once they have passed can never be retrieved. We must welcome each new day as the thrill of a new adventure, as a blank canvas where we can create something unique, where we can satisfy ourselves on a job well done, and where we have contributed something of merit to those around us.

Today, and every day is worth making the most of, so seize it and make it do your bidding – and it will surely reward you richly.
