The title here is taken from just about one of the most famous lines of all time “In the beginning was the word…...” (St John ch.1 v.1) and what a wonderful uplifting statement that is. It is packed full of possibilities and of hope of a fulfilling life to come, of a golden chance to be much more, and give more than we did yesterday. Yet we may feel that such challenges and opportunities seldom come our way, that we spend much of our time on the sidelines of life.

It is true that there will be people who believe that any kind of beginning will naturally start with the arrival of morning, where we have a full twenty fours stretching out before us. Yet the thrill of a new adventure, the challenge of a fresh opportunity, the chance to begin all over again, is available to us at any time of the day, and it is surely one of life’s greatest blessings.

To start with we should contemplate the coming day with hope and belief in our heart for a day is what we make of it. Of course there are going to be those killjoys who will quote that phrase from the Bible “Who knows what a day will bring forth?” and argue that there will only be uncertainties and difficulties. Yet this quote can be seen as spoken with a sure expectancy of happiness, that the day will hold hidden joys and unexpected pleasures. To start with happy, hopeful expectations is the certain way to make all our hopes into realities.

We can begin our day by wondering what we can do, not only for ourselves, but also for someone else. And if we can end it with the satisfaction that someone has reason to be grateful for our existence, can give a purpose and a zest to life which little else affords in so great a degree. Living with this outlook of hope means an attitude of friendly goodwill. That is the greatest thing in the world, the most powerful factor for, removing bitterness and hurt, and for making our day a happy one, it never fails.
