EXPECTATIONS



Do you ever notice that life seldom works out the way we plan? That for some unknown reason life just doesn’t seem to want to cooperate with our expectations. We expect things to go a certain way and they don’t. Something or someone is always raining on our parade. People disappoint us, the promotion we had hoped for never came and on and on it goes.

This causes us to become frustrated and upset. Our stomach churns inside, anger raises its ugly head and we become upset and impatient. The problem is that our perception of how life should be and how it really is are quite different.

Like children who can’t get their own way we stomp our feet, cross our hands and pout. “If you are not going to play the game by my rules then I will take my bat and ball and go home.” We scream, “Mommy, life is not playing fair!”

Our hopes, our dreams, our expectations of how life should be are so different from reality that we continually set our selves up for a fall. When we expect circumstances to meet our preconceived ideas then the outcome is usually disappointing. We can’t continue to spend our lives demanding that people, events and things in general be the way we want them to be.

Madison Avenue has made a fortune on over promising and under delivering.

Do you really believe there is a pill out there that will make you thin without diet and exercise?
Do you really believe that there is a perfect marriage, a perfect job or a perfect child?
Do you really believe that a certain car makes you a man or a certain fragrance makes you more attractive?

I would like to suggest that you keep your dreams but loosen up on the way they will unfold. On every trip there are bumps in the road, it simply comes with the journey. Quite expecting your day, your job or for that matter your life to be problem free. Instead of fighting against life, embrace it, dance with it, even if it steps on your toes once in a while.

As we learn to accept this fact, (and it is a fact) we will become less tense and we will begin to sense an inner calmness and freedom as never before. Life will become a lot more fun, we will become a lot more gracious and those little bumps along the way will become part of the adventure.

So next time something does not turn out the way you expected simply release it, set it free like you would a balloon and let it float away. Give up control of people and circumstances then you are free to relax and enjoy the ride.
