A frustrated mother gave a quarter to little Billy and said, "Why do
I always have to pay you to be good? Why can't you be good for
nothing like your Dad?" The mom used poor phraseology but
displayed an important principle -- don't spoil the kids!

There are interesting and important words in Psalm 119:66-68
(nlt), "I believe in your commands; now teach me good judgment
and knowledge. I used to wander off until you disciplined me; but
now I closely follow your Word. You are good and do only good.
Teach me your principles."

Do you realize how important that last phrase is? In studying
God's Word we should be constantly looking for God's principles
instead of trying to read between the lines and knit pick over
details. Principles are "where it's at." Are we fussing over minor
details while at the same time overlooking major principles? I'm
afraid so -- that's why we have so many denominations and splinter
groups -- we get hung up over inconsequential details. We major in
minors. As soon as someone gets a "revelation" about a new
detail, they seem to start a new church.

Most of us in conservative Christendom believe in a literal
interpretation of Scripture. However, whether we admit it or not,
most of us use selective literalism. We take it literally when it
doesn't impinge on our life-style or personal belief quirks. When it
does, we find a way to explain it away.

For example, if we really read literally, then the specific
instructions of Paul to the unique first century church have to be
followed to the letter in all future generations of churches. But
that's where we break down -- we pick and choose. C'mon admit it
-- we are selective literalists. Otherwise, women in the church
would be as silent as a clam and as plain looking as a 15th century
European statue.

What's my point? Principles, folks, principles. As we read God's
Word, let the Holy Spirit reveal God's basic principles for Godly
living and let's quit spinning our wheels over details. There, I've
said it -- now I feel better. Can we please use "good judgment and
knowledge?"
