We live in an instant world. We eat fastfood and microwaveable meals. We see products sold to gratify people's tastes immediately. People are generally resistant to waiting.

Yet periods of delay, suffering, and trial are inevitable. There are indeed times when roads are rocky that we can't see what lies ahead. It takes patience to survive and grow as we move along the way!

Impatience brings about negative consequences. Here I'm reminded of Moses in the Bible. Because of impatience, Moses killed a man that led him to 40 years of suffering in the desert. Years later, he became impatient again that he smote the rock and lost a trip to the Promised Land.

Someone said that God can grow a mushroom overnight, but He will take time to grow an oak or a giant sequoia. It normally takes 14 to 15 years of school education to get a child ready for employment or mature responsibilities. Successful businessmen spent many years of patient effort and investment to grow their businesses.

Knowing that patience is good ought to develop our character, but we often get impatient just the same. Usually the hardest place to be patient is in the furnace of suffering and trial. How easy it is for us to miss the fruit of patience!

Let our prayer be, "Lord, help me to learn to be patient and live." And let's do it right now!
