The Bible tells us about a man that was caught picking up a bundle of sticks on the Sabbath day. God had forbide any type of work on the Sabbath. It was to be a day of rest and to commune with God. The man was taken and stoned to death. The hebrews needed something to remind them to obey God's commandments. What could God use? Well one day God told Moses to make a fringed garment with tassels on each of the 4 corners of the garment. It was to be seventy two inches long and twenty four inches wide. Every male hebrew was to wear this garment every day. Each morning when they would put on their clothes the last garment put on would be the "Tallit" or the "Prayer Shawl". This would remind the hebrews to obey God's laws. The tallit was used for another purpose. When the hebrews travelled in the wilderness, they used a large tent to worship God. When Aaron and Moses went into the tent on the Day of Atonement, it would have been impossible for two million men to get inside the tent. The tallit became each man's tabernacle. They would put the tallit over their heads and pray to God in private. Their mind was to become the spiritual Holy of Holies. They were to think Godly thoughts. The folds of the tallit that fell over their arms represented the folds of the tabernacle. It literally was their own private tabernacle to worship God. In the time of Jesus some of the Pharisees would spectacle of themselves as they would go out to the city streets and pretend to pray. They would strain their faces and use big words to impress the people. Jesus told us that when we pray don't think you will be heard for your big, public, prayer. He said to go into a closet and pray. Pray to God in secret and He'll bless you openly. Use your closet! What type of closet could Jesus have been talking about? The type you put clothes in? We need to remember that most 1st century biblical homes were just one big room dwelling. They probably had no closets. But if you were a jew you wore your "closet". That's right! It's the tallit or prayer shawl. Jesus was probably refering to a jew's prayer shawl. For he or she( for a woman the wearing of a tallit was optional), could place the shawl over their heads and prayer. Now you may say Roger I don't have a prayer shawl, what should I use for my closet? Well Dear friend it might be your closet in your bedroom, or it could be leaning against a tree up in the woods. A closet can be anywhere. Someplace where you and God can be alone. I have a friend who when he built his new house actually built a prayer closet, where he and God could be alone. Where is your closet? If you don't have one, find one and commune with God. Amen.
