It’s Monday and I sit here eating left-over food from Saturday night’s dinner of sesame chicken. The only problem with this picture it is only 10:00 on Monday morning. I forgot to eat breakfast and my stomach rudely reminded me. Because I am in the middle of a project, I decided to scope out what was in the ‘fridge for a quick fix. Delighted to see the white leftover box, I remembered the sesame chicken. Okay, it’s not breakfast, but it is only two hours before lunch.

Most people, who know me, realize I would have normally eaten breakfast several hours ago, but the day got ahead of me and I simply found food unimportant. Maybe if that would happen more often I could lose this extra twenty pounds I’m carrying around.

Just for those of you who consider yourself second time around connoisseurs,this sesame chicken taste great! When I think of how many of us try to apply quick fixes to our problems, being that it is a physical hunger or spiritual hunger I too am convicted. Sometimes, when the day is moving full speed ahead, I grab a quick verse to chew on while I am scurrying through the next detail in life. It may cause me to remain a little more mindful of His presence during the day, but mostly it is just done out of necessity. It isn’t always like this. Nothing can compare to those times when I plan the day, putting aside adequate time to sit at His feet, to read His Word and to converse with Him. In my thirty years of being a Christian I have yet to find anything more refreshing then being in His presence.

I have met many people who cringe at the idea of spending more than just a few moments of a day reading His Word or praying. Society has convinced us through media that we can resolve all of life’s problems in just a few minutes. Those who dare to spend time with God know that problems aren’t usually solved so readily. However, what we do know is that our problems will be solved in His timing.

The result of me desiring a quick fix to eat was a healthy dose of heartburn. That is because as I sat to eat, I continued to work as well. How many of us decide to take a moment and spend it in His presence, while all the while thinking of things we need to get done, or even taking those task with us into His presence?

As I recall the many passages where Christ spoke intimately to his disciples I am deeply moved. I am aware of how powerful the Word of God is. Let’s look at this scripture in the book of Luke.

And they said one to another, “Did not our heart burn within us,while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”
(Luke 24:32 KJV)

When things get out of control, it is time for heart check up. Having too many days filled with heart burn? It is time to slow down and to take precautions. It is time to have a heart that burns after God, not after a meal. How do we fix that? Make a plan. Plan to spend time in His presence. Be selfish about it if you have to. There are a lot of books out there that can get you on the right track. However, I truly believe His WORD is all you need. If your just starting, let me encourage you with this scripture:

“…like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation (1 Peter 2:2 NASB).”
