Recognising an idol in the 21st century.



In our culture the sight of idols are not as obvious as in eastern ones. We are familiar with the images of budda and Hindu deities that are displayed on our screens as we see shots of Thailand, India and other places. So the concept of idol worship appears foreign to us and we somehow convince ourselves that we are not an idolatrous nation like them.
. How wrong are we.
Our idols are not as obvious but just as real as any statue of budda.
We have the Idol of Self.
The biggest Idol is ME...
Independence, self-sufficiency and self-centeredness.
Everytime I depend on my own efforts rather than the Holy Spirit.
Everytime I do what I think is best rather than seeking god's will and perfect mind.
The Pride of measuring myself against others instead of seeing my true worth in God's sight.
When I measure myself against you I will either come up with inferiority or superiority.
Both of these lead to trouble.
Spiritual Pride.
Inferiority is not Humility... It is just hurt pride.
It can make me jealous, envious, critical, competitive, quick to put others down, self conscious, reserved and over sensitive.
It puts up walls between us and stops us being one in Christ.
Then there is the spiritual pride that comes when god has used you. The vessel or tool (Me) being proud of how god has used us for some special thing or given us some wonderful gifting. As if the tool were worthy of honour for being used, instead of the honour and glory and praise going to the Lord who uses us?

After all it’s just meeting the purpose it was designed for.
