Truly God is Good

“Truly God is good to Israel, to such as are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no pangs in their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other man, nor are they plagued like other man. Therefore pride serves as their necklace; violence covers them like a garment.” Psalm 73: 1-6

From his own observation and the testimonial awareness of God’s faithfulness, the psalmist declares that “truly God is good to Israel.” Those that are pure in heart are blessed with the favour of God.

He recognized, “but as for me”....for his near fall and the sliding of his steps occurred when his eyes were fixed on those he thought to be better off than he. Although they cared not to include God in their lives and carried on in their wickedness, they seemed to be doing fine, (proud, strong, trouble-free and no hassle living). Their pride, because of their status, they wore like jewellery for all to see.

The psalmist stopped short (by the grace of God for sure) from having this observation ensnare him into a wrong way of thinking and reaching a conclusion that would not only be a lie but would cast a shadow over the undisputed goodness of the LORD toward him.

Because things are often not what they appear to be, I hope to never envy those whose lot in life appears easy. In this world it may seem they “have it made” but that long tomorrow awaits them when their true poverty will be exposed. May I never fall prey to doubting the goodness of God to me, by His grace and for His glory.
