I Will Sing

“Also Your righteousness, O God, is very high, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You? You who have shown me great and severe troubles, shall revive me again, and bring me up again from the depths of the earth. You shall increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side. Also with the lute I will praise You- and Your faithfulness, O my God! To You I will sing with the harp, O Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You, and my soul, which You have redeemed. My tongue shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long; for they are confounded, for they are brought to shame who seek my hurt.” Psalms 71:19-24

God’s ways are above our ways and we grasp but little of His righteousness for it is very high but the great things He has done testify to it. The psalmist asks a question that cannot be answered, “Who is like you?” and if answered, then only in the negative, no one, nothing, for He is the Superlative of all and any comparison must stop with Him.

That there has been weighty troubles is acknowledged but in quick response to this comes the declaration, “You shall revive me again” and raise me up. There is a reward in being cast upon the Lord and His comfort meets the submissive one on every side, that is, surrounded by it.

It must have been a joy to David to take his harp and allow the melody of his heart to reach his fingers and lips. His overflowing heart found its voice in his praise. He never loses the wonder of being a redeemed soul and recognizing that his tongue is redeemed also and he gives it full rein to expound upon the righteousness of his Redeemer who stands on guard for him.

Because “Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb” is my song also, may my heart sing it heartily and may my lips make it known by His grace and for His glory.
