“By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us, O God of our salvation, You who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth and of the far-off seas; Who established the mountains by His strength, being clothed with power; You who still the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the peoples.
They also who dwell in the farthest parts are afraid of Your signs; You make the outgoings of the morning and evening rejoice.
You visit the earth and water it, You greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; You provide their grain, for so You have prepared it. You water its ridges abundantly, You settle its furrows; You make it soft with showers, You bless its growth.
You crown the year with Your goodness and Your paths drip with abundance. They drop on the pastures of the wilderness, and the little hills rejoice on every side. The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered with grain; they shout for joy, they also sing.” Psalms 65:5-13
“By awesome deeds in righteousness” – the psalmist did not want to grow accustomed to the righteous deeds of God, so he speaks of them and records them. Without these deeds that can be performed by God alone, the ends of the earth would fall into chaos.
He expands upon how the earth responds to the righteous rule of God: the establishment of the unmovable mountains; the stilling of the noise of the mega volumes of the sea, whose moving otherwise would be deafening, (not to be missed is His stilling of the tumult of the people); the glory of the rising and setting of the sun; the provision of water for life; the sprouting of the grain for food; the breaking up of the hard earth to make a soft bed for each seed; the abounding of His goodness and the pastures graced with flocks.
Joy and singing accompany these manifestations of His great goodness and righteousness.
If all of this is being displayed now in a fallen world, what will it be like when His deeds of righteousness will be viewed by fully redeemed and fully righteous eyes. “Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion.”
Because these earth-bound eyes miss out on so much of His righteous doings, I look forward to the day when, with unveiled eyes, I behold Him as He truly is in all His splendour, by His grace and for His glory.
