Born of His Will: The Word of Truth That Changes Everything

“Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

There is a question that quietly lives in almost every human heart: How do I truly change?

A young woman scrolling late at night through images of other people’s carefully edited lives wonders why she never feels quite enough. A mother, exhausted and stretched thin, wonders how she can become more patient. A young man entering the workforce wants to succeed without losing his integrity. A student asks what his life will amount to.

Across generations, the question remains the same.

How do we become better? Stronger? Wiser? Kinder?

James gives us an answer that is both humbling and deeply comforting:
“Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth.”

Let that settle in for a moment.

The beginning of real transformation does not lie first in our willpower. It begins in the will of God.

D.L. Moody once said that the Bible was not given merely to increase our knowledge but to change our lives. I understand what he meant. Scripture is not just information; it is transformation. But it is also a revelation. It reveals the mind of God, therefore we are to know it. It reveals the will of God, therefore we are to obey it. It reveals the heart of God, therefore we are to love it.

True knowledge of God never remains theoretical. It reshapes the soul.

James says we are begotten “with the word of truth.” That word of truth is the gospel — the message of who God is and what He has done in Christ. Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword… and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The word “quick” means alive.

Have you ever read Scripture and felt exposed? As though the words were searching you? Motives uncovered. Excuses stripped away. That is not coincidence. The Word of God is living. It penetrates deeper than we realize.

Yet James adds something even more profound: “Of his own will begat he us.”

John echoes this truth in John 1:12–13: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God… Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Not inherited.
Not self-produced.
Not achieved by determination alone.
But born of God.

That truth removes boasting. It also removes despair. Salvation does not rest on the fragile strength of human resolve. It rests on the steady mercy of God.

Jesus illustrated this in His parable of the Pharisee and the publican. One man stood confidently, rehearsing his religious accomplishments. The other would not lift his eyes toward heaven but cried, “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

It was the broken man who went home justified.

The doorway to new life is not pride. It is mercy.

There is a difference between regret and repentance. Judas felt regret. He returned the silver. He felt the weight of what he had done. But his sorrow turned inward and led to despair. The publican’s sorrow turned upward and led to mercy. Scripture calls that “godly sorrow.” It is grief over sin because it offends a holy God.

“A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”

When the word of truth takes root in a broken heart, real change begins.

Consider Saul of Tarsus. He was confident, disciplined, and religious. Yet on the road to Damascus, a light from heaven stopped him. Confronted by Christ, he asked a simple but life-altering question: “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”

That question marks the turning point of transformation. It is the language of surrender.

James goes on to say that those begotten by the word of truth become “a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.” In the Old Testament, firstfruits were the earliest and best portion of the harvest. They were set apart for God. They were evidence that more harvest was coming.

Those born of God become living evidence. Not perfect. Not flawless. But marked by grace. Their lives quietly testify that the Word of truth still changes people.

This transformation touches every part of life. Honesty replaces compromise. Kindness tempers harsh speech. Forgiveness overcomes resentment. Holiness becomes something beautiful rather than burdensome.

Peter writes, “Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

Holiness does not mean withdrawal from life. It means being set apart within it — shaped by God’s character.

Psalm 37:4 gives both promise and direction: “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” When we delight in Him, our desires begin to change. We begin to want what He wants. Integrity more than applause. Character more than comfort. Christlikeness more than worldly approval.

And here is the great comfort in all of this.

If change depended entirely on your strength, you would eventually fail. But James reminds us that the initiative belongs to God. “Of his own will begat he us.”

The mercy is His.
The new birth is His.
The sustaining grace is His.

You are not self-made. If you are in Christ, you are grace-made.

For the young woman wondering if she is enough, this means your identity does not rest on comparison. It rests on being born of God.

For the young man striving to prove himself, this means your worth does not begin with achievement. It begins with mercy.

For anyone who feels weak or inconsistent, this means your salvation is not hanging by the thread of your emotions. It is anchored in the will of God.

The Word of truth does not merely inform minds. It brings life.

So let us come like the publican. Let us ask like Saul. Let us delight in the Lord. Let us seek holiness. And let us remember that salvation is of the Lord.

And when He changes us, we become firstfruits, living proof that the Word still works.
