“Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up; fighting all day he oppresses me. My enemies would hound all day, for there are many who fight against me, O Most High.

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?” Psalm 56:1-4

The psalmist opens this psalm with a plea for mercy and had he not received the mercy of God multiple times before he would not be voicing it here in confidence. It was really a plea for God’s faithful intervention in his ongoing journey of life on earth.

He addresses God as “Most High”, verbalizing his knowledge of the sovereignty of God and that is a good place for him to come from when petitioning for God’s mercy.

What would he do when he was afraid ( and rightfully he was afraid many times)?.... “I will trust in You.” He praised God’s word because inhearing it, he heard from Him in whom was his trust.

“What can flesh do to me?” - what a liberating conclusion at which to arrive.

Because, unlike the psalmist, I have no known enemies apart from the world, the flesh (my flesh), and the devil, which are formidable foes to battle; yet I have come to know the faithfulness of my God in his recognition of and intervention in the varying scenes in my life. I, like the psalmist, will declare, “I will trust in You” , “I will praise Your word”, “I will not fear”, by His grace and for His glory.
