When Ice Storms Descend God's Rule and Man's Rebellion in the Heart of the Tempest

Across the United States, winter storms have stretched more than two thousand miles, bringing ice, snow, and widespread power outages. Roads have closed. Homes have gone dark. At the same time, the cost of living continues to rise as energy, food, and basic necessities become more expensive. Official explanations consistently point to nature, climate, or chance. And yet, thoughtful and intelligent leaders—military men, economists, engineers, and scholars—are quietly asking whether something more may be at work.

Scripture affirms without hesitation that God is sovereign over the weather.

“Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word.” (Psalm 148:8, KJV)

“He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.” (Job 37:13, KJV)

Nothing in creation operates outside God’s authority. Storms do not outrun Him. Ice does not fall apart from His knowledge. Yet the Bible also teaches something modern discussion often avoids: God’s sovereignty does not cancel human wickedness, nor does it prevent evil plans from being imagined and carried out—within limits God Himself sets.

God Allows Evil Men Real Freedom—With Real Consequences

The Bible never portrays human beings as puppets. It presents them as moral agents capable of both righteousness and great evil.

“The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.” (Proverbs 16:4, KJV)

This does not mean God authors evil. It means He permits rebellion for a time and judges it in His time. Joseph understood this when he spoke to the brothers who sold him into slavery:

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good.” (Genesis 50:20, KJV)

Their intent was evil. God’s purpose was righteous. Both realities existed at the same time.

A serial killer does not stumble into murder. He plans. He imagines. He rehearses. He acts. God does not approve of such evil, yet He allows it temporarily, restraining it according to His will. Scripture never denies this reality.

“He deviseth mischief continually.” (Proverbs 6:14, KJV)

If this is true of individuals, it is also true of institutions.

When Power Is Centralized, Motives Must Be Examined

Throughout history, governments have disrupted food supplies, manipulated economies, and consolidated resources—not always accidentally and not always ethically. Scripture repeatedly warns about unjust rulers and oppressive systems.

“Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees.” (Isaiah 10:1, KJV)

Today, many believers are noticing patterns: farmland is being purchased and consolidated, energy costs are rising sharply, and commodities such as gold and silver are soaring higher. These developments make it more expensive to live, to heat homes, and to operate vehicles. Whether by incompetence or intent, the result is increased dependence and reduced freedom.

It is not sinful to ask whether these outcomes are merely coincidental.

“The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.” (Proverbs 14:15, KJV)

Human Power and the Temptation to Play God

Around the early 1960s, a statement widely attributed to Lyndon B. Johnson captured a revealing mindset of that era: “He who controls the weather, controls the world.” The above quote came directly from LBJ's lips.  I heard it myself from a televised broadcast.  The sentiment itself was unmistakable. It reflected a growing confidence among political and scientific elites that mastery over nature could translate into mastery over nations.

This context matters. Johnson was no friend of the institutional church. Years earlier, in 1954, he was instrumental in advancing what became known as the Johnson Amendment, placing restrictions on churches and pastors that effectively subjected them to federal oversight in matters of speech and influence. The worldview behind such policies was not one of biblical humility, but of centralized authority and technocratic control.

When leaders speak of controlling the weather, they are not referring to the sovereignty of Almighty God. They are referring to human systems—governments, scientists, and global alliances—that believe technology can replace restraint, and knowledge can replace wisdom.

Scripture warns us that this impulse is not new.

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God… but became vain in their imaginations.” (Romans 1:21, KJV)

The desire to control creation rather than steward it is not morally neutral. It is a temptation to cross boundaries God Himself has drawn.

Predictive Programming and the Normalization of Control

Popular culture has often prepared the public for ideas long before they appear in policy or practice. One striking example is the film Geostorm, released in 2017. The movie centers on a global satellite system designed to control the weather—technology originally intended to prevent natural disasters but ultimately weaponized, nearly destroying entire regions of the world.

It is fiction, but fiction often reflects what powerful minds are already contemplating. Such films do not prove anything. Yet they normalize ideas and condition the imagination. Extraordinary concepts begin to feel familiar, acceptable, and even inevitable.

Scripture warns believers not to be naive about such influences.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers.” (Ephesians 6:12, KJV)

God Will Judge Those Who Destroy the Earth

The Bible is clear that God does not overlook the destruction of His creation, whether physical, moral, or economic.

“And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come… and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.” (Revelation 11:18, KJV)

This is not poetic exaggeration. It is a warning. Those who exploit the earth, its people, and its resources for unrighteous gain will face judgment. That destruction may come through environmental abuse, economic manipulation, engineered scarcity, or systems designed to concentrate power at the expense of human dignity.

Many today openly embrace ideologies hostile to biblical Christianity. Some even align themselves with dark spiritual philosophies. I will not mention names. Scripture does not require it.

“Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse.” (2 Timothy 3:13, KJV)

Believers are not called to ignore this reality. We are called to discern it.

Not Everything That Happens Is Righteous or Ethical

It is tempting to assume that because God is sovereign, everything that happens must therefore be righteous. Scripture never teaches that.

God permits evil.
God restrains evil.
God judges evil.

In the meantime, He calls His servants to watch, pray, and ask hard questions.

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21, KJV)

When storms rage, economies shake, and systems strain, it is not ungodly to ask whether wicked men are exploiting crisis for control. It becomes ungodly only when truth, humility, and charity are abandoned.

A Closing Word of Balance and Hope

God commands the weather.
God rules history.
God sets limits no man can cross.

Yet He allows human rebellion long enough to expose it.

Our role is not panic.
Our role is not silence.
Our role is faithful discernment.

“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13, KJV)

Light does not make a noise—but it does make a difference.
