"Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things." Luke 20:8.

You are either alive spiritually or you are not. You are either sensitive to and aware of spiritual dealings or you are not. The “them” in the above verse were the chief priests and the scribes with the elders, the ones who were thought to be the “spiritual” lot. But they were absolutely blind as to who Jesus was and that the power for His great acts were a result of His being God. His authority was from on high and they were indignant that they did not have a say in what He did or didn’t do.

The material world is just the setting for the spiritual workings that go on each day. The material world is all that most people have and it is their point of reference for all their life; a feeble, decaying point of reference it is. Jesus says, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” Jn. 6:63

It is small wonder that the chief priests, scribes and elders were baffled by Him, for no spiritual life flowed through their proud hearts and closed minds. He spoke to dead men but in His grace He still spoke.
