“Arise, O LORD, confront him, cast him down; deliver my life from the wicked with Your sword, with Your hand from men, O LORD, from men of the world who have their portion in this life, and whose belly You fill with Your hidden treasure.

They are satisfied with children, and leave the rest of their possessions for their babes. As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.” Psalm 17: 10-15

The psalmist asks the LORD to step in to preserve his life. He knows that the LORD is mighty in confrontation, mighty in casting down and mighty in the wielding of His sword of judgment in the defence of His own.

Men of the world drain all they can from the world for this is all they will have and sadly, but justly, will have an eternity to reap the consequences of their priorities while in the world.

Satisfaction, the damning satisfaction of living with only a view of earth, is easily reached by them. All things tangible make up their lives and crowds out any thought of eternity from their easily satisfied hearts. They have their portion in this life and will enter eternity empty-handed, bereft of any blessing from God...a desolate, horrible eternity of pain, regret and frustration.

The psalmist makes his contemplation personal..."as for me"  and he tells of what will complete his satisfaction and the glorious hope of its fulfillment.

Because I have a heart that is too easily satisfied with the things of this life, may I be wary of settling for these alone when I could drink from a full cup of the blessings of God, by His grace and for His glory.
