How many of us actually contemplate and look deeply into the moment depicted in the famous, 'Pieta', the sculpture so articulately done by the world famous Michelangelo?
Have we ever looked closely into the streaked lines of sorrow seen in the face of Mary as she held the lifeless form of her son Jesus in her arms, when at last his body was taken down from the wood of the cross and placed into her lap, where she received him in utter grief as she beheld his gaping wounds, torn flesh, lanced heart and blood smeared form from head to toe?
What were the thoughts running in her mind or the searing pain so great that numbed her senses, too horrendous to be taken in? The sacrifice of his life, an unimaginable price that she could not even begin to comprehend the high love of the Father and the Son.
The sadness in her heart was unstoppable as she placed him in the Sepulchre and went home with a huge sense of desolation, loss and loneliness. She had suffered along with her son and would always be inseparable from him, just as she was at the Cross, now in heaven and even here on earth stands in her proper place next to her Son in every Church where Jesus resides in the Holy Tabernacle.
This solid truth is a beautiful testimony in the life of St. Hyacinth from Poland in the miracle at Kiev which took place in the thirteenth century.
He once saw a mob of miscreants, the Tartars approaching the Church to seize it. St. Hyacinth was celebrating Mass and on realizing the plans of the enemy, he immediately collected the Ciborium with the consecrated host so that the Body of Christ would not be desecrated. As he prepared to flee from the Church, on passing a heavy alabaster statue of Mother Mary, he heard the voice of a woman asking him as to why he was leaving her behind to the mercy of the mob. Looking back it dawned on him that the Statue of the Virgin Mary in the Church was speaking to him. He promptly went and carried the heavy Statue in his other hand and attempted to flee.

When he reached the bank of the Dneiper river, he realized that the current of the water was very strong. In one hand, he had the Eucharist and in the other hand the statue of the Virgin Mary. He could neither swim and would definitely drown. Also he did not want to leave either behind.
Knowing that his pursuers were close at hand, he decided to pray to the Blessed Virgin and intercede for her help in this perilous situation.

Almost at once, the waters stopped their flow and a clearing was made in the middle of the river with the waters flowing upwards in either direction. St. Hyacinth walked through on dry land in the middle of the river holding both the Eucharist and the statue of the Blessed Virgin safely with the walls of the water around him. As soon as he reached the other side of the bank, he saw that the mob had caught up with him. As they tried to go after him, the waters came back on the clearing with full force and seeing the strong current of water, the mob retreated as they knew it was impossible for them to cross the river.
Timely prayer and intercession of the Blessed Virgin to her Son truly present in the consecrated Host saved the life of the saint.
But over two thousands year ago a similar incident happened at the Red Sea and again when Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land when the waters of the Jordan parted for them to cross on dry land as at that time Joshua was carrying the Ark of the Covenant, the presence of God with him, high above his head.
Still today, thousands of years later we can expect similar miracles to take place that once took place both before and after the time of Jesus on this earth.
Mary was the New Ark of the Covenant carrying Jesus in her blessed womb.
Today we are the Ark of the Covenant carrying the Eucharistic Lord in our hearts.
The onus is on us now on how we protect and safeguard the presence of Jesus and his Mother on this earth with great passion and fervour and also on how we can draw others to come and believe in the One Triune God by our own dedicated love and faith in action and words?
