Forty days and forty nights
Is what it took for the floods
To enrage the seas and lands
But Noah remained safe in his ark.
Forty days and forty nights
Is what it took for Moses
To remain on the mount of Sinai,
Speaking to God and being with him
Until he came down with the two Stone Tablets.
Forty days and forty nights
Is what Jonah preached in Nineveh
As to the time of their destruction
If they did not repent and turn to God.
Forty days and forty nights
Is what it took for Jesus in the desert
To fast and prepare for his greatest ministry
Overcoming all three temptations of the evil one.
Forty days and forty nights.
Is what it took after the Resurrection
For the Risen Lord to be on this earth.
Giving his final mandate to his apostles
Until he ascended by his own power into heaven.
Is what it took for the floods
