               CHURCHES ARE THE SAVIOR’S CANDELABRA

 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.  Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” Mathew 5:14-15 RSV 

‘The oil of gospel grace is pure and free from sediment, so the light it feeds is clear and bright. Our churches are the Savior’s golden candelabra, and if they are to be  lights in this dark world, they must have holy oil.’ C H Spurgeon

How we can learn from such wisdom as given here.  When our Lord gave instruction, ‘to let your light so shine before men….’ He didn’t say this as a casual invitation, but to admonish and encourage.

Our witness today has been under greater attack from the power of darkness, more today than ever before. Yet, ‘Greater is He who is in us….’  

                       Our Call and Election

Considering our task to be God’s Light, Peter gives admonition, but great encouragement as well.
‘For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these things are yours and abound, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. Therefore, brethren, be the more zealous to confirm your call and election, for if you do this you will never fall.’ 2 Peter 2:5-10 RSV

Being zealous for sharing, is wanting never to be fearful of the flesh. There will always be those not wanting to hear, but  being our Lord’s candelabra improves with practice. Remember, we who make up the fellowship of followers of the Way, are the Church!
