                                Salvation Is Not By Osmosis

Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:5-6 RSV

It is said that people influence each other by osmosis, or, skills gained through osmosis, gradually and without obvious effort. But God’s word, as we see from Jesus speaking to Nicodemus, is ‘new birth’ transformation through water and the Holy Spirit which comes from above. Believing faith is not a gradual process, but recognizing as given us from God.

Something that keeps me from being too self-sufficient is understanding the measure of faith I have is ‘assigned to me!’

 For by the grace given to me I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him. Romans 12:3RSV

Sober judgement is not becoming influenced by this ever changing word around us. People are filled with terror of what’s going on in our culture and world of turmoil and discontent. They  believe this paranoia comes by some sort of corporate osmosis.

Biblical promise for today is far greater and everlasting. It does not change over time. That which is born of the Spirit does not evolve with time. Our Lord asks us to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the lord.

 Christianity isn’t true because it “works,” but it does work because it’s true. If God did not take the form of a man, if He had not died and then resurrected, if He were not on the throne of the universe, then Christianity’s cultural “benefits” would not matter all that much. But He did, so they do.
