Almost everyone we meet is crying out with a mental health issue. Anxiety from work, the demands of raising a family, the increasing pace of life, the escalating cost of living, world conflict and the uncertainty of our times all accumulate to cause stress and worry. But there is a spirit in this age that works to bring about chronic mental health concerns, that is even more penetrating and sinister. It is the spirit of selfishness.

A cursory read of Paul's letters in the New Testament reveals that he tied his life to the well-being of others, rather than his own comforts. He didn't neglect his needs, but he wasn't overly absorbed by them, as so many are today. Comfort, security and safety have become our prime concern. Christ and the welfare of His people have not.

Well-being focuses on self, but sacrifice focuses on others. As our western culture continues to looks out for number one, mental health issues are escalating. Could there be a correlation? Paul would probably say 'most definitely.' So often we evaluate alternative choices set before us on what is best for us. Let's be followers of Christ who consider first what is best for our others, especially our church family. The words of Jesus still ring true – it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Father, forgive me for selfishness and an unwillingness to sacrifice comfort at the expense of reaching out to help others. Make me like Jesus, who gave all and shows me the way of true self denial. Amen.
