Sacrifices Pleasing to God

'Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.' Hebrews 13:16 (ESV)

Sacrifices of encouraging words must be accompanied by a sacrifice of loving deeds towards others. James for example explains that visiting orphans and widows in their need or giving a material gift are the fragrant offerings that are acceptable to the LORD. What useful assistance is a superficial word of encouragement if we omit to meet another's need?

Yet the pressure of our own lives and troubles can drive the fundamental responsibility of doing good to others far from our mind. We will get around to it – later.

What does the author of Hebrews encourage us not to neglect? The list is extensive and indicative of how we let brotherly love for one another continue (verse 1). We are to not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, but to generously consider their needs and support them with loving concern and kindness. Abraham, in Genesis 18:1-8 offers a fine example of showing hospitality to his guests. We are to remember those in prison, as though we were in prison with them, offering physical support, prayer and encouragement (verse 3). We are to remember those who are mistreated and suffer for their faith (verse 3), knowing that we too suffer for the cause of Christ. We are to remember our leaders who speak God's Word (verse 7) and honour them in submission as they watch over our souls.

Let's ensure that we have a clear conscience in these matters and desire to act honourably in all things, for these are the sacrifices well pleasing to our LORD.

'Heavenly Father, in my preoccupation with personal concerns, I have rushed passed another and neglected to consider their needs above my own. In repentance I ask Jesus, that you remind me of your own sacrifice and to emulate you in loving care and concern for others. Thank you.'
