    Leaven -Symbol to Sin, or, Kingdom of God?

 “No grain offering that you bring to the Lord shall be made with leaven, for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey as a food offering to the Lord.” Leviticus 2:11 ESV

As I read through God’s word each year, I’m amazed what I see for the first time. Symbolism from the dietary and moral laws become more meaningful to our living by grace through faith under the new covenant given us to follow, as we live in Jesus  today.

The night of the exodus Israel was to depart Egypt in haste No leavened bread shall be eaten.” Israel was to depart in haste to leave Egypt, wholly devoted to God. From Leviticus it was recognized, offerings could ferment, the grain offerings were not to include yeast (leaven) or honey.

The bible sometimes uses leaven as pervasive spread of sin, used in 1Ccorinthians 5:6-7: Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 

Observe now… how leaven represents the Kingdom of God, to include both salt and honey for flavoring.  And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?  It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.” Luke 13:20-21

Even as the woman who hid her flower until the proper time, to be leaven, maybe with added salt, God is working in us to be leaven. To flavor one’s appetite for the ‘Good News’ of hope promised. God’s way of escape from being trampled down under the feet of this unruly world of  discontent and starvation for the ‘Bread of Life.”

Father, challenge us to be salty leaven to a starving world. To lead others to flavor the goodness of God. AMEN
