Do You Feel Fearful and Weak?

What do the true stories of the Israelite army’s refusal to face Goliath and the Israelites refusal to go into the promised land, have in common?

The Israelite army was focused on their weapons of war and their own strength compared to Goliath. At the edge of the promised land the Israelites were looking at themselves, their own natural strength in comparison to the enemy that currently occupied the promised land, giants in their eyes while they saw themselves as grasshoppers.

In both cases, a wall of fear kept them from walking in faith, victory. This fear came from comparing themselves to the enemy, the task in front of them. They saw themselves as weak and fearful and the enemy as much greater than they were and they were correct in the natural. Apart from God, relying on their own strength, they had a right to be fearful.

Today, the same applies to us. The battle is raging around us. Evil is rampant and uncertainty is abounding as love grows cold.  If we focus on anything but our Lord and Savior, as we are told to do, we too will see defeat, weakness and fear.

Much of our problem is an impure heart (double minded), one that is not fully focused on the Lord and His work. An impure heart leads us to trust in the shifting sands of our own ability, bank account and our strength, even though we say we are trusting God. In the end, the only answer is to shift all our trust over to the Lord.

Lord, I really need your help to walk in faith. To get both feet out of the boat and on the water. To do the Word, not just read it. Give me a pure heart, a heart that is not divided between You and the world. I want to look to Your strength alone in my battles. Help me Father to be the child of faith you have called me to be, to face my fears, no longer running from them. Amen

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness. ISA 41:10 BSB

Conclusion: When I feel fearful, I am always looking at myself in comparison to the mountain in front of me. I am looking at my own natural strength instead of God's power, strength and promises. The Bible tells us repeatedly to fix our eyes on God and the eternal things not the temporal, to believe and trust His promises. Peace is right in front of us, we just need to trust the promises of God. We either believe God or we do not.
