The Emmaus Journal
The Tree

One early morning while parked in-front of the our auto repair clinic I was left to wait for some time. Mornings being what they are, especially in my life, I enjoyed such only in slow motion. So to enjoy this morning, despite the waiting to have our other car fixed, I rolled the window down and gazed at the new days blue sky and began to enjoy the gentle breezes wafting by. Just beginning to soak in the warming sun’s rays, I noticed the medium that separated the four lanes of traffic. Being parked on a city street the medium was a welcomed spring site. I noticed how well the grass and shrubbery plantings were doing even though they were in a contained space that was not conducive to nature in general. Even this part of our community was congested with the business of the morning traffic.

Laying my head back on the car seat’s, head rest I lazily looked at the trees that the medium provided a home for, but I knew they were primarily used to break up the static scenery of countless store fronts and to hopefully defuse the noise of all the daily traffic. But, my attention rested on one Tree that had actually survived and grown to be quite a large specimen. By it’s general leaf and branch type I concluded it was likely to be in the Maple family. Large green pointy leaves that clustered on great limbs and generous airy branches. It had at least grown a good twenty feet in height and filled the medium width with its greenery circumference. It really was a hugh Tree, right here in the middle of this busy area. It must be at least twenty to thirty years old, I surmised. Maples grow quickly but, it does take them time to become stable mature trees.

Soon I became disinterested in the Tree and started looking for something else to take my attention for a spell. But, as I looked away, I was immediately draw back to look at the Tree again. It sure was a beauty. I looked away again, but instantly looked back at the tree. It truly was a picture postcard scene. This one lone Maple was gorgeous!

I continued to look away and look back again at the Tree several times. Was it my imagination or was this Tree special? Now believe me, I love God’s nature in all it’s exquisite beauty, but this Tree was really something else!

As I beheld it once again the Tree literally took on a whole new light. I could not look away. I tried, but was held in awe at the site of this one Tree.

This single Tree drew me into it’s beauty and LIFE. I saw it’s leaves in a green that was now vibrant with LIFE. I saw the wind as it wrapped its way through the branches and brushed each leaf in a dance of LIFE. Limbs waving in a praise of excellence toward Heaven. I felt it 's created strength and glory as it shared God’s LIFE, proclaiming it’s Creator as the ultimate, Holy and Supreme.

This Tree literally included me in a reverence of Worship that, few humans I dare say, have ever experienced! Especially me. I knew this Tree knew me! Because in my own knowledge of God this Tree was inspired to share it’s knowledge of God with me. A splendor to behold and to be included in. This creation of God's recognized me!

I was so taken aback that I literally laughed and cried in quiet joy at the same time. A Tree had seen me and asked me to see it. All it’s created beauty held me in repose. I joyed with it’s joy and it also responded and joyed with my joy. We held each other’s gaze in a Worship toward God that only the Universe was witness to.

This single Tree along side a busy street had purposely included me in it’s morning Worship to God. It had joined it's created spirit with mine in a reverence of awe and love toward our God.

Hug a tree? I had Worshiped with a Tree. Can life be any better? Can God express Himself any better? Oh, I dare say yes, because we do know our God is full of infinite possibilities. But, this Tree and I will never be the same again! We shared a God Moment that cannot be purchased or duplicated, but only told and re- told, to be shared again and again.

If one cosmic ion of this God Moment can bless you, it has been well worth the writing. I can only try to share such a translucent spiritual event, knowing that it is part of the continuos echo of many God Moments which
fills the whole Universe!

It is an interesting thought. However, as Jay pointed out nature cannot give worship to the Father like we can. Nature holds the beauty of God and inspires us to worship Him who made all things. We were created to have fellowship with Him, not trees, plants, etc., etc. Inanimate objects were not created for intimacy like we were. We were design to worship Him who knitted us together, not nature.

Interesting thought, pretty well written but I’m thinking that your premise is a not a Christian one. Unlike human beings, the natural world does not bring praise to God by the use of the intellect or by a conscious decision to worship. But the praise creation brings is the praise of BEING, all of creation gives glory because God is the creator, they point to His Glory in that manner. Creation does not share the same consciousness as humans that your article suggests. Psalm 148 is a great example of ALL creation praising him, but it does not convey the fact that creation includes us in its worship time. The heart of worship is not just in simply being the thing we were made to be, it’s the mindful recognition that there is someone greater than us. Creation can lead us to worship by observing its beauty but it does not “know” us.
“O LORD our Lord, how excellent [is] thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.” Psalm 8:1
