Rejoice in Today

“This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalms 118:24

The writer of Psalms 118 determined to rejoice in each day even while he faced attacks by fierce enemies and endured discipline from the Lord. The whole psalm is brimming over with praise and thanksgiving to the God he trusted, to the God who gave him victory and who blessed him even amidst the trials.

I have struggled with anxiety most of my life. Often I awaken in the early morning hours with a sense of dread, subconsciously thinking, “What stressful things are going to happen today? Where am I going to fail?”

Each day has its share of trials and joys. But instead of succumbing to negativity, we can say, “I wonder what great things are going to happen today. What opportunities will I have to succeed with the Lord’s help, to receive his blessings and to bless others?” Our Savior wants to walk with us through each day, fellowshipping with us, guiding us, and providing for us. We can ask him to open our eyes to his presence and work in our lives. And when pain or other challenges come or when we fail, we can remember that we are more than conquerors through Christ and that nothing can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:35-37). We can know our sins are forgiven (1 John 1:9) and that God causes all things to work together for good (Romans 8:28). 

Our decision to trust the Lord and his power, to look for good even in the hard, are acts of devotion and worship that surely please him. Along with the writer of Psalm 27:13-14, we can say, “Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”

PRAYER: Father God, life is hard but you are good. I choose to trust you to help me through each new day and I thank you in advance for all your blessings. AMEN.
