God is our Secure Foundation

Sometimes, God allows trials to rattle us and reveal how we have misordered our securities. Our family recently experienced several health challenges within a short time: my brother was hospitalized with an infected deer tick bite, my elderly mother had to have bowel surgery and two weeks later, I tested positive for COVID and missed nearly a week of work. These difficulties rocked my three greatest securities: my loved ones, my health, and my finances. I’m still struggling to regain my footing.

We all need security and comfort and God has given us various means to fulfill those needs: jobs, retirement accounts, insurance, church, family, friends. We enjoy our youth, our health, and many other blessings. But if we make these things our chief sources of safety and comfort and don't have God as our foundation, we will be shaken and devastated when they are threatened or lost. 

The more foundational our trust in God, the fewer worldly securities we require to feel safe and the more stable we remain when we experience their loss. The Apostle Paul so learned to be content in Christ, he didn’t care whether he lived in want or in plenty (Phil. 4:11-13).  Psalms 73:26 says, “My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” Psalms 20:7 tells us to trust in God’s power rather than human strength. 1 Timothy 6:17-18 warns us not to put our hopes in uncertain wealth but in God’s abundant riches. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 reminds us of the believer’s hope beyond the grave and Ecclesiastes 12:1 tells us not to put too much stock in being young, but to follow God. 

What is eternal, what cannot be taken from us, forms the foundation of our greatest comfort and security. The Apostle Paul describes it in Romans 8:35-39 when he declared that absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of God we have in Christ Jesus our Lord. Wrapped in God’s love, we can never be shaken.

PRAYER: Father, I thank you that your love and salvation are our secure rock and foundation for all eternity. Amen.
