You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. Romans 8:9 NIV

One must have the Spirit of God indwelling them in order to belong to Christ. This is because without the Spirit of God one lives under the law of the flesh and is enslaved to sin. Nothing within us of our own can make us holy and righteous. This can only happen through God’s Spirit living within the individual. It is God living within an individual that makes that one righteous in the eyes of God. Accept the gift offered and live in Christ.
