Jesus Is The Bread of Life, and The Living Water

     There is an account in John 6 of Jesus feeding several thousand people with just fives loaves of bread and two fish, one of many miracles he performed. The story takes a spiritual tone when Jesus makes bread the center of attention. In verses 6:22-59 Jesus actually makes the claim that he is the “bread of life.” In 6:35 he says, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger...”

     Jesus goes one step further, as recorded in 6:51 and 58. He says, “if anyone eats of this bread that comes down from heaven, he will live forever.”

     There is a big push by some today to add to longevity, through transhumanism, which is technology connected to the human body. Transhumanists go so far as to say that there is no soul or spirit. That is totally contrary to what Jesus taught. You have a soul, and by accepting Jesus as your Savior, you will live on in a conscious state in God’s presence. Jesus is the true source of eternal life. 

     Jesus is making a distinction between physical bread that can only temporarily satisfy the human body and spiritual “bread”(his own person) which will bring satisfaction not based on material existence. More than that, the “spiritual bread” that Jesus offers will bring hope, peace, purpose, and eventually eternal life.

     A little while later, Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water“(7:38). The mental picture here is of a person‘s character indwelt by God’s Holy Spirit, which exudes a welcome relief from the cares of the world, like a spring of refreshing water. 

     Do you desire to be free from a materialistic life that does not offer purpose for living? Accept the REAL JESUS as your “bread of life” and your ‘living water.” He will not only spiritually nourish your life, but also eternally save your soul.
