     The Healing Power of Jesus

Jesus encountered a man who had been an invalid for 38 years. This is narrated in John 5. He asked the man, “Do you want to be healed?” Why would Jesus ask such a question? The man replied that he had no one to help  him be healed. 

     Some people really do not want to be healed or delivered from an addiction. They have become too comfortable the way they are. Only when the physical or emotional pain of not changing becomes greater than the pain of changing their ways, will change occur. Jesus may be asking this same question to you. Is there anything in your life from which you would like to be healed, or delivered from an addiction?

     Jesus told the man, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk,” and at once the man was healed. He had to demonstrate faith in THE REAL JESUS to do that. 

     Later, Jesus saw the man in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well. Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” In this case, Jesus knew that some sin in his life had caused his condition. This is not to say that sin is always the cause of physical problems. Absolutely not! In some cases it is. There can be physical and emotional problems stemming from immorality, alcoholism or drug addiction. Whatever the case may be, Jesus wants to show people what life can be like free from addictions, illness, or from making poor choices. 

     Jesus will not always heal people right at that moment, as he did with the invalid. It may be a gradual process. However, I have read accounts of those who have been delivered from an addiction like smoking, alcohol, or drugs, or from some physical illness. 

     If you are struggling with a sickness, addiction, relationship, or even a purpose for living, go to a quiet place with no distractions or interruptions and cry out to God, saying, “Yes, Jesus, I really want to be healed.” He will listen. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the broken-hearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.” 

     Perhaps you feel lonely and have no one to help you overcome something in your life, in the time of greatest need, just like the invalid who said, “I have no one to help me...” Psalm 72:12 says that Jesus “delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper.” Put your trust in the REAL JESUS. He can heal you, but more than that, he will save your soul.
