1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but he who hates correction is stupid.

Whoever loves discipline love knowledge like lovers love cupid,
But he who hates correction is nothing more that just plain stupid.

2 A good man obtains favor from the LORD,
but the LORD condemns a crafty man.

The favor of the Lord the good man obtains,
But the Lord condemns those with crafty man brains.

3 A man cannot be established through wickedness,
but the righteous cannot be uprooted.

Through wickedness a man can never get rooted,
But through righteousness a man can, and this will not be disputed.

4 A wife of noble character is her husband's crown,
but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

A wife of noble character is her husband's crown,
But the disgraceful wife is like decay wearing his bones down.

5 The plans of the righteous are just,
but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.

The plans of the righteous are just, on them you can depend,
But the advice of the wicked is deceitful, and will fail in the end.

6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood,
but the speech of the upright rescues them.

The words of the wicked for blood lie in wait,
But the speech of the upright rescue from that fatal state.

7 Wicked men are overthrown and are no more,
but the house of the righteous stands firm.

Wicked men are overthrown and are no more,
But the house of the righteous stands firm just as before.

8 A man is praised according to his wisdom,
but men with warped minds are despised.

A man according to his wisdom is praised,
But men with warped minds are despicably appraised.

9 Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant
than pretend to be somebody and have no food.

Better to be a nobody with a servant at your feet,
Than pretend to be a big shot, but with nothing to eat.

10 A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal,
but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.

A righteousness man cares for his animal's needs,
But the kindest acts of the wicked are not flowers, but weeds.
The righteous man knows his animals need fuel;
The wicked man has no love for them, only self, and so is cruel.

11 He who works his land will have abundant food,
but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment.

He who works his land will enjoy abundant luxuries,
But the fool will suffer loss chasing his fantasies.

12 The wicked desire the plunder of evil men,
but the root of the righteous flourishes.

The wicked for the plunder of the evil men their desire nourishes,
But the righteous have their just desire, and their root flourishes.

13 An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk,
but a righteous man escapes trouble.

An evil man is by his sinful talk trapped,
But a righteous man from such trouble has an escape route mapped.

14 From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things
as surely as the work of his hands rewards him.

A man is filled with good things that the fruit of his lips will him afford,
As surely as the work of his hands will also bring him reward.

15 The way of a fool seems right to him,
but a wise man listens to advice.

The way of a fool to him always seems right and nice,
But the wise man will get other perspectives and listen to advice.

16 A fool shows his annoyance at once,
but a prudent man overlooks an insult.

A fool shows his annoyance at once, like a child not an adult,
But a prudent man will rise above this and overlook an insult.

17 A truthful witness gives honest testimony,
but a false witness tells lies.

A truthful witness will honesty display,
But a false witness will use lies the truth to betray.

18 Reckless words pierce like a sword,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Reckless words pierce like a sword and produce bad feeling,
But the tongue of the wise close over wounds and bring healing.

19 Truthful lips endure forever,
but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

Truthful lips speak what will endure forever,
But a lying tongue speaks what is soon gone forever.

20 There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil,
but joy for those who promote peace.

Those who plot evil have deceit in their hearts,
But joy fills those who promote peace with their smarts.

21 No harm befalls the righteous,
but the wicked have their fill of trouble.

For the righteous there can befall no ultimate harm,
But for the wicked life is filled with trouble and alarm.

22 The LORD detests lying lips,
but he delights in men who are truthful.

Lying lips the Lord does detest,
But truthful men delight the Lord best.

23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself,
but the heart of fools blurts out folly.

A prudent man is most often quiet and jolly,
But the heart of a fool is always blurting out folly.

24 Diligent hands will rule,
but laziness ends in slave labor.

Diligent hands will rule and be brave,
But the lazy man ends up as a slave.

25 An anxious heart weighs a man down,
but a kind word cheers him up.

An anxious heart weighs a man down,
But a kind word cheer him up with its pleasant sound.

26 A righteous man is cautious in friendship,
but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

A righteous man will from bad friends stay away,
But the wicked fool will go along and be led astray.

27 The lazy man does not roast his game,
but the diligent man prizes his possessions.

The lazy man does not roast his game,
But the diligent man prizes what he has, and acts not the same.

28 In the way of righteousness there is life;
along that path is immortality.

In the way of righteousness there is life that none can sever,
For along that path is immortal life that will last for ever.
