Become A Fruit Picker

My pastor recently spoke on the fruits of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23. They are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

     These fruits are contrasted with the deeds of the flesh listed in the previous verses, 19-21. They are too numerous to mention, so I encourage you to read it for yourself.

     There are nine fruits of the Spirit, but 15 deeds of the flesh. It only takes nine fruits to overcome the fleshly deeds because some of the fruits encompass several deeds. It could also be said that the Spirit is more powerful than the flesh (or should be) if one puts into practice the fruits.

     The point is, though, that the fruits serve as evidence that the Holy Spirit indwells one’s life. In addition, my pastor emphasized the importance of the fruits being evident in our culture now more than ever! The deeds of the flesh are seen every day in the news. Christians need to make the fruits counteract the deeds.

     It is very simple to memorize the nine fruits. Then you can think them in your head or say them out loud several times a day. This can really help to keep you mentally focused.

     As you do this you are helping your thought life become more focused on not only developing positive traits in your life, with the power of the Holy Spirit,  but in the culture as well, as you interact with those around you.

     What good things could happen in our lives if we focused every day on the fruits of the Spirit? What opportunities might we have to influence and help transform the thinking of others? What fruits do you believe you need to give the most attention to? What deeds of the flesh do you struggle with? Pick the fruit that would help you have victory in that area.
