“Honesty is the best policy”
1599 AD. That’s the first recorded use of the phrase. (By Sir Edwin Sandys}
That is a true statement.
It has always been true.
It is true right now.
And it will always be true.
Remember that Jesus called himself the Truth and he lived his life in accordance with truth and honesty. Had he not done so, he could never have become our Saviour.
Honesty is definitely the best policy when it comes to ourselves, especially in respect of our spiritual lives. First of all, we need to be honest with God.
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Galatians 6:7.
No, we certainly can’t fool God.
Secondly, we need to be honest with others. We can easily mislead people. Our church-going, our reading the Bible, our singing hymns and more, can give a very deceptive idea of what we really are.
I know that from personal experience. Many years ago my years of outward ‘Christianity’ were interrupted by the words ‘You can’t fool God’. They came to me very powerfully, and I was compelled to seek salvation in Jesus crucified. I was compelled to be honest with God. And I had to be honest with other people.
If we belong to Jesus, if we have found salvation through his sacrifice at Calvary, we need to live our ordinary lives truthfully and honestly. Make-believe has no place in a Christian’s life!
Let’s be real with God, and let’s be real with each another. I’m sure Jesus would like that.
David was very honest at times. He often exposes his inner feelings in the psalms.
“How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?”
How long shall I take counsel in my soul?
Having sorrow in my heart daily?” Psalm 13:1, 2.
