I recently wrote about how the world creates a phony Christmas, which amounts to idolatry. Although I reject the worldly, counterfeit Christmas, I too am tempted by other idols.

What you are about to read is a self satire:

I've liked sports cars ever since I was a teenager. Of course, the Corvette was one of my favorites. I liked the MGB English sports car as well as the Austin Healy and the Jaguar XKE. I watched the Lemans sports car race about as religiously as I watched the Wizard of Oz when it came on while growing up. The Le Mans road race is a long, varied race with lots of twists and turns through beautiful scenery, if I remember it right. Specially made cars run this race, such as the Ford GT I think it was. I believe they have a mid engine. The 2020 Corvette could probably run the Le Mans, right out of the showroom floor, with little or no modification.

Not long ago, I read about the new, 2020 Corvette, which is mid engined. My lust after a white, older Covervette that's been sitting in a garage (and I heard for sale) for more than a year, which I pass on my way to church has abated. The 2020 Corvette is not only mid engined, but has an automatic gear shifter which can shift gears faster than the best of humans (sort of like the story of John Henry). It can go from zero to 60 mph in something like three seconds. It has torsion bar suspension which cushions the car from speed bumps, and I guess potholes. Between its suspension and it being rear engined, the 2020 Corvette offers stability. It is a beautiful looking car.

Awhile back I saw a model of the 2020 Corvette in a store. Recently, I saw a bigger, die cast model of the 2020 Corvette. Maybe I could make a shrine with it. Better yet, as 60s singer Janis Joplin asked God for a Mercedes Benz and a color TV (don't know why, as she could have probably afforded them), I can ask Santa Claus for a Corvette for Christmas.

As to the shrine: I could put the Corvette model in a box-like wooden shrine, bordered by Corvette paraphenalia. I could say something like "Oh mighty Corvette, who can take over the shifting and get me through the gears better than I do, who can go from a dead stop to 60 mph in three seconds. Oh beautiful Corvette..."

I should worship the creator, and not the creation. God, of course, did not create the Corvette ex nihlio, as He did the earth, but He gave humans the resources and talent to make the car. And He created a fish, the sting ray, which inspired the design of one line of Corvettes.

"Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him. And when the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, 'Where did this man learn these things, and what is this wisdom that has been given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?' And they took offense at Him.
