                                                    Our Surpassing Worth

Daily living ‘in Jesus,’ defined for us through God’s eyes takes time and a lot of growing and learning. To come to understand what the Apostle Paul also learned when he spent those three years in the Arabian Desert. [ref: Galatians 1:17-18]

One might say it was our Lord’s season with Paul to re-educate him to recognize who he was to become as ‘new creature’ in Jesus from what he was as a persecutor of the church.  

“Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ.” Philippians 3:8 RSV

What we are about with every passing thought and action will reflect how much of God’s Holy Spirit is controlling our heart. Paul recognized this as he addressed the people at Philippi with the conviction; he would daily dedicate himself to the Lord and surrender his own mind, will, and emotions, to be under God’s divine authority.  

His ‘surpassing worth’ was now recognized as gaining Christ over the flesh and the material world around us we live in. Even his academic credentials he received under the instruction from Gamaliel was considered past tense. No longer of any use other than probably recognizing God’s true purpose and value to His honor. Not as intent for legal justification to destroy.    

Finding our own ‘surpassing worth’ is recognizing everything we are, what we own, and what we’re responsible for, and who we’re accountable to… is under God’s eminent domain. Letting go ‘self’ is learning to be transformed into who God wants us to be.
