What's the Purpose of the Church?

             What’s the Purpose of the Church?

God declares there are many functions of ‘The Church.’ Local fellowships have a huge list of functions with individual purpose. But I want to focus directly on two functions given from scripture.

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16 RSV

“Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations”…’?  Mark 11:17a

We are defined as a representation of God’s temple. Set out using this temple as a ‘house of prayer,’ through the power of God’s Holy Spirit. Better understanding these two purposes within the office of the church will enable us to move those ‘mountains’ Jesus spoke about.  

“Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Mark 11:23

We may not be asking God move Mount Whitney or Everest, but the concern He’s wanting for us as ‘temples of God,’ is ‘trusting faith.’ With the many offices or purposes of the body we call ‘the Church,’ prayer is such an integral ingredient for growth to grow deep roots within the body.  

“As therefore you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so live in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7

Father, since we are a representation of your temple, help us to recognize our need more for prayer and faith given us as a functioning part of ‘Your Temple.’
