IMPRESSING GOD

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 1Corinthians 1:25 (KJV)

A few years ago whilst in university I signed my name onto the Church building project list. One had to put ones name in a brick on a brickwall poster on the wall at the back of the Church. Each brick on that poster was a specific amount of money. Knowing it was for a good cause and feeling obligated to support the Church I told myself that I would raise the money.

I didn't think to pray about how much I could give. I just signed my name up in a brick. I later learnt the amount of the brick and it wasn't money that I could easily come by. As time went I noticed that I was not able to raise that amount of money. A whole year passed. Each time I walked up to the poster I felt ashamed that I had failed. Later I ended up in the Pastor's offfice narrating my ordeals and difficulties to secure money for the brick. The Pastor was more understanding than I was gently letting me know that I couldn't do it and that it was okay to let it go despite my protests that I had to do it. It was a while before his message sank in.

Like Peter I wanted to show God that I could do something for him and not disappoint him. I was relying on my strength. I forgot that God knew what I was capable of and what obstacles I would meet. I forgot that in all things I was to prayerfully seek him and learn his will. Unfortunately, I looked at the matter as something that I could handle on my own and have an applause. There is nothing I can do in my own strength to impress God. God desires that I seek him in all my endeavours. Had I asked God he would have directed me. Instead I tried to show him that I could do it alone without realising that I was not impressing him at all.

PRAYER: Lord many times, I think that I can handle a situation forgetting that you hold all things in your hands. Help me to seek you always and put my trust in you because my own strength fails but you never fail. Amen.
