Who Is God To You

Who is God to you? This question was asked by a leader in one of the Bible classes I am attending. It was not a question thrown for discussion but more for pondering on after some contributions we were making on our study lesson.
I hear the name God mentioned so many times, both by believers and unbelievers. It is used in an endearing manner, “God, I missed you, sweetheart.” It is used in cussing, “You can bet your God-ass I will get even.” Some children are named Godwin, Godsome, Godwill, etc.
Then there are those people who just ‘God’ everything all day. The street lights turn green as they approach, “that is God.” They walk into a grocery store and find their favourite bread fresh from the oven, “that is God.” They leave their vehicle in the parking lot unlocked, and no one dares to grab the large bag on the back seat and they shout, “that is God.” Is God a little messenger boy who either runs ahead of them or lingers behind to make sure all is well with them?
These same people can pull all the strings you can imagine to make a success of their agenda while cussing all the way, and when it’s there for everyone to see they shout out with a smile from ear to ear, “that is God.”
Is it any wonder that many young people today are growing up with a confused belief of who God really is? He seems to have become a household name that can be attached to anything that is favourable at that time. These ‘God callers’ hardly refer to the God of the Bible. That God is too rigid for them and who has time to read about Him anyway when social media has become so demanding and time-consuming.
So, yes, who is God to you? The question begs for an answer especially today in a world overflowing with so much knowledge and yet very little wisdom considering the unwise decisions and immoral lifestyles we are all too familiar with. Who is God in a world full of tragedies, suffering, disease, divorces, disasters, poverty, pain and sorrow?
One time I received a friend request on Facebook from a person who carried both their first and last names in my local African language. But according to their photo gallery they were however not black as should have been the case. They were very light in colour. I noticed the contradiction immediately but I wanted some fun and accepted them as a friend anyway. The person was so quick and eager to have daily conversations with me and get acquainted. I played along for a couple of days then it was time to expose them. I asked who they truly were and of course, they got offended. “What makes you think I am not who I say I am?” “Because in my country you will never find someone as light as you are carrying the names you assume to be yours.” I educated them.
The person obviously didn’t know much about my country and culture. They thought that by copying two names from my cousin’s three names that would make them an African and convince me into a ‘relationship’ with them.
Who is God to you? Is it a name that just drools down your lips at your wish? Or have you read of the God of the Bible who could dry up the seas, walk on water, feed the hungry, cure the sick and the barren, raise the dead, convict the sinner of their guilt and offer them repentance? Is your God the God who sits on the throne in heaven watching over every activity that happens here on earth? Is He the God who you can trust with your dying breath, knowing that He is right there with you to take you to heaven? Is He the God you will be ready to meet and give an account of every thoughtless and senseless word and deed you spoke and lived out here on earth? If you have doubts about who God is to you, He is not too far to ask questions or search for. He is right there in the Bible. All you have to do is open the pages and start reading.
