Defending the Bible

I sat there quietly minding my own business and trying as much as possible not to pay attention to the discussion that was going on amongst this little group of students.
I didn’t want to listen, but one statement caught my attention because it was repeated with vehemence and agreed to by the rest of the group. “The Bible cannot be trusted”, twice one said as the others echoed, “No, it cannot”.
What I heard in my spirit, however, was, “God cannot be trusted”. Now, I don’t separate God and the bible and I just couldn’t let that statement go unchallenged without being true to my Christian faith. So, with as much courtesy as possible, I asked, “Excuse me, why is it that you say that the bible cannot be trusted?”
“Because it is full of flaws and omissions. The first bible that was written was correct, but when the Romans took over the rewriting, they changed everything and left out bible books they didn’t want because they didn’t want a certain class of people to be empowered”, one of the group said.
I had heard this dogma before; circulated through various media and forums to destroy the authenticity of the bible. So I counteracted as gently as possible, “The Bible is the inspired word of God, with or without flaws and it can be trusted”.
I was almost ‘stoned’ as angry and abusive words were thrown at me. They called me illiterate, not enlightened and of low-level psychological ranks. I didn’t get offended, I felt sorry for them for they were the ones disillusioned by the many religious modern day thinkers and researchers who look for gullible candidates to push down their anti-God beliefs with one motive only – to destroy the Christian faith.
So I threw in another question, “Have you read the bible for yourself from Genesis to Revelation and discovered where the flaws and omissions are?” “No, why should we do that? We are more interested in reading and discovering the missing books, so we can know what ‘they’ are trying to hide from us”, one said. The others nodded in agreement.
“Who are ‘they’”, I asked. “The Romans”, they answered. I almost laughed but short of being punched in the face, I just said, “You need to read the bible for yourself and let the God of the Bible speak to you. The bible was written by men anointed by God to do so. It is through the revelation of the Holy Spirit that you can get to understand the bible scriptures. The interpretation could differ from one bible version to another, but the bible is still the word of God and can be trusted”. I recalled quietly the words of 2 Timothy 3:16, ‘All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness’.
I don’t know if I managed to get through to any one’s conscience, it didn’t look like it. But I had tried to shed some light on their ignorance. They, not me, were being deceived by the Enemy’s low-level spirits.
Why would one believe it when someone said, “you see that book over there; don’t bother reading it because it is flawed. But here, read what should have been inside it that was omitted”. Common sense should tell you that you should read what is being denounced first and then go towards the correction. Why give a failing mark to a report without first reading it. What kind of an examiner or lecturer would do that to his students?
Yet that is what most of these modern day thinkers are telling their audience and because people are generally lazy, will not read the bible for themselves and want to feel as if they have a superior knowledge above others, they are quick to swallow this hogwash. That is how many have fallen to the control-mindedness of cults. These leaders make you feel special because of the new knowledge you have, but in reality, they are drawing you away from the truth of the bible and enslaving you in their own low-level philosophies.
