The Spirit of God's Commands

            God’s commands to you before you became saved (I am assuming you are born again and saved), were precisely and only to bring you to the cross. To prove this, read James 2:10, “For whoever shall keep the whole law (God’s commandments), and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all (NKJ).” You, I and everyone else that has ever been born is a lawbreaker and guilty of breaking the whole law of God. God created this as the driving force to His cross. God begot Jesus and by His perfect life, He fulfilled the whole law of God for us, as a substitute. He did for us what we could never do, satisfy the holiness and perfection of God. We are made perfect, holy and justified in Jesus Christ alone ( Romans 8:3-4, NKJ).

            But before Christ, we were dead to the law and it literally killed us. There was no way to keep it. As a matter of fact, the harder we tried to keep the law of God, the more we broke its laws (read Paul’s stating this fact in Romans chapter 7). What a wretched people we were. God wanted faith and to bestow His Spirit in His people and a relationship along that line, but man insisted he would “work” his way up to God (Tower of Babel, Genesis 11:1-9).

            Even those who were experts in the law (the Pharisees) and who were in their own minds the only keepers of the law were guilty. The stronger they became in their workings of the law and the keeping of it, the harder and harder their hearts became. Saul of Tarsus, who later became Paul the Apostle, was a “Pharisee of Pharisees,” exceeding in knowledge, was as hard as a rock before Christ got His grip on him.

            But now to those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ on the cross, God’s commands or “the Law,” is a tutor and guide, but Christ is our salvation, in the Spirit. Through Him, we who were un-spiritual, were made spiritual, when we put forth our faith in Him, as the Savior of our souls. Thus, we are put back into our original position with God where Adam and Eve began, by Christ, in Spirit. With God’s Holy Spirit indwelling us now, God’s commands become enablings. They go from once burdensome, to blessing. From just letters on a page to spiritual conversation between us and our God. God is Spirit and He made us spiritual in order for us to be in relationship with Himself, together, two spirits becoming One, “that they all maybe one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us” (John 17:22, NKJ). So we are now to grow in spirit, being Holy Spirit filled and Holy Spirit-led, as we were destined and designed to be. Indeed, study and obey God’s commands, but look more so at the spirit and the reason for His commands to us- to keep us in a steady, loving and healthy relationship with Himself.
