Maybe you know somone who is involved in the New Age movement. Here is a message you can take and personalize for any New Age believer you may know.
Dear New Age Believer,
We have several things in common. I know that you believe that “God is Love.” Christians believe this too.
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8 ESV
We also believe that love is God’s greatest calling.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor 13:13 ESV
We both believe that God wants us to love others and that when we do, we are acting like God. God is pleased with anyone who strives to love others.
No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 1 John 4:12 ESV
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:16 ESV
Jesus told us to love our neighbor.
…You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matt 19:19 ESV
Here is something you may not have known. The Spirit of God’s written laws, including the Ten Commandments, is love? The Spirit of a law is the author's intent, the purpose for writing the law. Living by the Spirit of the law is the only thing that can truly fulfill the letter of the law. When the Bible tells us that "Love" is the only thing that can fulfill the letter of the law, it is revealing to us that "Love" is the Spirit, the purpose, the intent of that written law.
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Rom 13:8-10 ESV
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Gal 5:14
In other words, if you love your neighbor; you will not lie to them, steal from them, hate them, murder them, sleep with their spouse, etc. Love fulfills the law by default.
The Love Test – How Loving Are We?
While we may claim we are all about love, how can we tell if we have been walking in love, as Jesus walked in love? Since love is the Spirit of all of God’s law, anytime we have broken God’s Commandments; we have not acted in love. Personally, I have failed many times.
So let’s start with a few of God Commandments, listen to your conscience and be honest as we review them.
1) How many lies have you told in your life?
2) Have you ever stolen anything?
3) Have you ever murdered anyone? Jesus said God see’s strong dislike and hate as though we murdered the person in our heart. 1 John 3:15
4) Have you ever used God’s name in vain? That is blaspheme, using the name of God who gave us life as a cuss or curse word.
5) Have you always honored your mother and father?
Every time we break one God’s commandments we are not only violating the letter of God’s law, but we are also violating the Spirit of God’s law, love. God calls it sin, sin hurts others and is unloving. Walking in the Spirit of love is so important to God that sin is called an abomination to God.
Jesus never broke any of these laws, never sinned. In other words, he walked by the Spirit of love, all the time.
He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 1 Peter 2:22
So how well have you walked in love in your life based on the commandments we just reviewed? In comparison to Jesus?
The Bible describes God's love
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Cor 13: 4-7 ESV
Can you honestly say that 1 Cor 13: 4-7 describes you and how you have lived this life? Can you say you are always patient, kind, never proud or boastful, never envious, never dishonoring of others, never self-seeking, never easily angered and never keeping a record of wrongs? If I am honest I fail often in these areas.
Jesus raises the love bar even higher.
Jesus then told us to love others not just as we love ourselves, but as he loved us. He elevated love to its correct standard, God’s perfect standard.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. John 13:34 ESV
Jesus standard for others includes loving our enemies. Have you always loved your enemies?
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Matt 5:44 ESV
Jesus love extended to even those who have committed mass murder and other terrible crimes. He even extended it to those who placed him on the cross.
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Matt 23:34 ESV
So, if we listen to Jesus and love others as he loved, we are to love our enemies and even those who would put us to death. That is how high he raised the bar of love.
Do you love your enemies? Would you die for them? Could you love and forgive those who were putting you to death like Jesus did? Could you love someone who murdered your family? How well are you loving?
Jesus loved really well; enough to pay for all of the sins, the unloving acts, mankind has ever committed.
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 ESV
God is Love
So we are both right, God is love, and he wants us to love others as Jesus loved us. But it is also true that we have often sinned. Sin is a trangression of God's written law and thus a transgression of the Spirit of God's law, love. We have often been unloving.
Jesus came to save us from our sins. He fulfilled all of his Fathers commandments that we could not.
IF YOU KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, YOU WILL ABIDE IN MY LOVE, JUST AS I HAVE KEPT MY FATHERS COMMANDMENTS AND ABIDE IN HIS LOVE. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. “THIS IS MY COMMANDMENT, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. John 15:10-14 ESV
There are now only two commandments to follow to be right with God and walk by the Spirit of love.
AND THIS IS HIS COMMANDMENT, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. 1 John 3: 23-24 ESV
Love by default does not lie to, steal from or cheat, even our enemies.
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Rom 13:10 ESV
Out of love, I am asking you to consider the whole counsel of Jesus.
Believe on Jesus and Love
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 1 John 4 13-21 ESV
Will You Let Jesus Love You Enough to Pay for Your Sins? Enough to Save You?
Jesus love set us free from the condemnation our sins have placed us under.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. John 6:23 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:16-18 ESV
"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent (change your mind) and believe in the gospel." Mark 1:15 ESV Then keep on loving others the best you can.
