The author is against all sin. I agree totally with Paul.
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Romans 6:15 ESV
In the New Covenant, there are only two commandments, and they bring more glory than the Ten Commandments ever could.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Tim 2:15 KJV
1)Jesus is a Christians high priest of the New Covenant.
but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’” This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. Heb 7:21-22 ESV
And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Luke 22:20 ESV
In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Heb 8:13 ESV
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17 ESV
2)When the priesthood is changed, the law is changed, the commandments are different.
For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. Heb 7:12 ESV
For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. Heb 7:18-19 ESV
who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter (the law) but of the Spirit. For the letter (law) kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Cor 3:6 ESV (emphasis mine)
3)Jesus fulfilled the Fathers commands, the Ten Commandments, the letter of the law that we could not. He set us free from the law of sin and death, the Old Covenant law, so we can no longer come under the condemnation of the law.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Rom 10:4 ESV
Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. Gal 3:23-26 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Rom 8: 1-4 ESV
and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. Acts 13:39 ESV
Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone (Ten Commandments), came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation (Old Covenant), the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory.Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory. 2 Cor 3:7-11 ESV (emphasis mine)
4) Jesus then gave us the two commandments believers are under that fulfill the entire written law, believe in him and love one another. His yoke is easy, and his burden is light.
Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” John 6:29 ESV
Jesus two commandments: Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him because WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS and do what pleases him. AND THIS IS HIS COMMANDMENT, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. 1 John 3: 23-24 ESV
IF YOU KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, YOU WILL ABIDE IN MY LOVE, JUST AS I HAVE KEPT MY FATHERS COMMANDMENTS AND ABIDE IN HIS LOVE. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. “THIS IS MY COMMANDMENT, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. John 15:10-14 ESV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”John 13:34-35 ESV
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 15:12 ESV
"This I command you, that you love one another.” John 15:17 NASB
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matt 11:28-30 ESV
At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 1 John 2:8-11 ESV
If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. James 2:8 ESV
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Gal 6:2 ESV
When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law, I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ. 1 Cor 9:21 NLT
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, John 1:12 ESV
5) The fact that Love is the only thing that fulfills the law tells us that Love is the spirit of the law. The Spirit of a law is the reason, the intent the author had for writing the law. It is the only thing that can truly fulfill the law.
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Rom 13:8-10 ESV
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Gal 5:14 ESV
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matt 22: 37-40 ESV
6) The Ten Commandments remain for the purpose they were intended. To be a guardian and schoolmaster, leading unbelievers to Christ and protecting us from each other’s fallen nature.
For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Matt 5:18 ESV
Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian/schoolmaster until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian/schoolmaster, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. Gal 3:23-29 ESV emphasis mine
realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 1 Tim 1:9 NASB
A righteous person in the Bible is always without question a person who believes God. In this case, believe the gospel and trust Jesus as their savior. The letter of the law of Moses is not made for the righteous, the Christian. The letter of the law is made for the unbeliever. Read HERE.)
7) The Ten Commandments are the letter of the law. The letter of the law kills while the Spirit gives life. The Jews had Jesus killed using the letter of the law.
Spirit of the law.
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8 ESV
Letter of the Law.
The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” John 19:7
8) Christians are not ministers of the letter of the law, the Ten Commandments. Just think of Jesus life – he lived and walked by the Spirit of the law – Love. He fulfilled the letter by walking in the Spirit. We are to be more like Jesus, not the Pharisee’s.
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Cor 3:6 ESV
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Rom 13:10 ESV
9) God abides in those who believe in Jesus and Love.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 1 John 4:7-21 ESV
