Before putting this down, I looked up the dictionary meaning of truth. Funny story, it defines truth as the thing that corresponds to fact or reality. It then defines fact as something that can be shown to be true. Such a perfect cycle! It is possible that truth (as presumed of love in most cultures) is a concept that cannot be described by spoken language. The word “truth” in my native language literally translates in English as “something that is said” (or ought to be spoken). In another local dialect it translates as “something good to be spoken”. It is human instinct to always want to know the truth or reality (even though we might not walk in it anyway); nobody wants to linger in the obscurity of ignorance. The Roman governor, Pilate asked Jesus in John 18:38, “What is Truth?”, but he didn’t wait for an answer. It is largely coherent to say that our mortal opinion of the truth is a direct function of our senses of perception. Sight, hearing, taste, smell and feelings (including emotions). Anything imperceptible by these “super five” is, by implication, not regarded as reality.

The bible addresses a different kind of truth that transcends our senses of perception. Apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:18, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (NIV)”. This statement does not blatantly refute what we may physically perceive as reality. What then, was Paul referring to when he spoke about “what is unseen”? We find an answer to that in Hebrews 11:3, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible (NKJV)”. Three key phrases here are: Things seen made from things unseen, The word of God and Faith.

The first standpoint from this scripture is that there exists a reality (truth) that surpasses the proficiency of our physical senses. This unseen reality is the greater one, because anything we can see or perceive emerges from this unseen (divine) reality talked about in that verse. One would ask, what then is the feature or disposition of this divine reality? This leads us to the second highlighted phrase. The word of God! Remember how God spoke creation into being in Genesis 1? That’s how the things seen were made from things unseen. The word of God therefore is Truth.

More importantly, John 1:1-5 gives a vivid description of truth that is the word of God. John, inspired by the Holy Spirit, tells us that in the beginning, the word was with God and was God himself. Through Him, all things were made. John further testified in verse 14, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (NIV)” John was referring to Jesus, who also declared in one of His sermons, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6. Why would the Truth (God’s word) have to become flesh and dwell among us? He came to show us the mind of God. A person’s words (as well as his spirit) convey his mind. He also brought grace, redemption and eternal life. He reveals to us the Father’s heart - how much He deeply loves us! No wonder Jesus always referred to God as the Father.

What part then do we play to walk in the reality of this truth talked about in the scriptures? It is exposed in the last phrase from Hebrews 11:3 pointed out above. Faith. When we look to Jesus instead of the circumstances around us, He supplies the faith with which to walk in His truth. Look through God’s word, all of His promises toward you His beloved child in Jesus, is the permanent and steadfast truth concerning you. All that is required is to accept and believe this truth that is the word of God. “But as many as received him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” – John 1:12 (NKJV).

In our walk of faith as believers, when we encounter certain challenges that may question our resolve in the truth, what do we do? For instance, the doctor’s report that looks disturbing, nagging opinions (contrary to God’s word concerning you) that seem to write you off, or emotional hurt and pain or all forms of negativities that confront us in this physical realm. At such times, what we need do is dwell on God’s truth concerning us His children, and remember that God’s word is sure and abides forever. This hope is an anchor for our souls. And then, by faith we draw forth our redemption from the unseen realm (God’s word) unto manifestation in the physical – speaking it forth as our heavenly Father did in creation. This is where our victory resides.
