There is a line of thought in our culture that everyone is a child of God. Well, first of all, how can that be when some people believe they came from a monkey? Second, people are not children of God just because they were conceived in the womb and became part of the human race. I have heard it said that everyone is part of God's family. Not so! According to biblical teaching there is a condition for being one of God's children. John 1:12-13 says, "But as many as have received Him (meaning Jesus) to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."
Accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior is the requirement for becoming part of God's family. You accept his grace as a free gift based upon what he did when he died on the cross for your sins. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you are automatically saved. You must make his death personal for you. The hymn, "Amazing Grace," has been sung at secular concerts by non-Christians and at family reunions as if everyone is saved because of God's grace. It is possible, however, to reject his saving grace and NOT be saved. If that is the case that person is not a child of God.
Being a member of God's family is both inclusive and exclusive. It is inclusive because it can include anyone regardless of race, ethnic background, or economic level. It is exclusive because it is only for those who call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for his or her eternal salvation. Become part of God's exclusive family today. John 3:16 tells us that "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life." You can put your name in the place of the "whosoever." If you do that, then welcome to the eternal spiritual and physical family of God. You can then call other Christians your brothers and sisters.

Good writing, very true John! Many people in America, even in churches do not understand this. NO ONE is born a Christian or a child of God. As you say, John 1:12 says that. If being born again causes one to become a child of God, what were they before? The answer: NOT a child of God. In fact, the bible says "we were by nature children of wrath".. Jesus bore that wrath as John 3:16 says, but reader, you have to activate this gift by receiving it, it is NOT automatic. People confuse being a child of God with being made in God's image. All were made in His image (freewill, a brain, moral creatures with accountability, etc). But none become a child of God until they experience a John 3:3 born again conversion. Everyone knows John 3:16. Who knows John 3:36 "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them." The verse, both an encouragement to believers and a harsh warning to those who reject God's Son Jesus....
