Job’s Wife

Scripture Reading
Job 2:9: Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!”

My family and I woke up Sunday morning preparing for church, and I am always the slowest person in the morning to get ready for church that irritates my husband. Of course, I fussed to myself when he is irritated by my slowness in the morning. However, I was ready for the Sunday morning message he prepared to give to the congregation. When we finally arrived to church, he walked to the pulpit and the message was on Job’s wife. I am thinking I must be in trouble.
In my husband’s message, he illustrated Job’s wife in a way that I have never heard before. My husband spoke, “even though Job’s wife spoke foolish, but she stood by her husband even though he lost his wealth and his health was destabilized”. My husband acknowledges that women desire security when the security is gone women become weakened in their faith. Job’s wife was weakened in her faith; nevertheless, she had little strength to push her way through the battle with her husband.
Job’s wife wasn’t similar to Queen Vashti, Esther 1:12, who refused the command of her husband. She was a wife that exemplified the standards of a virtuous woman even in the midst of her imperfection; she still kept her trust in her husband. She girds herself with strength, and strengthens her arms, Proverbs 31:17. Job and his wife is a perfect an example of a Christian marriage that represents suffering for Christ Jesus and the dependency on Him.
The scripture shows how Job was a Godly husband who characterizes stewardship, love, service, and communication toward his God and his wife. Nevertheless, God allowed Job to go through test and tribulation. In the book of James, it reads “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various tribulation trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:2).

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, strengthen all marriages on today. Jesus, you are the creator of marriages. You are the head of marriages. Teach husbands on how to be an example of stewardship, love, service, and communicators with their wives, 1 Peter 3:7. Teach wives on how to trust their husbands in their roles as leaders of the household, 1 Peter 3. In Jesus name, Amen.
